As the new academic year begins, Sangmyung University students are taking their academic knowledge beyond the classroom to address local community challenges. Organized by the Sangmyung Social Impact Center, the registration for the “Major-Linked Community Problem-Solving Volunteer Contest” successfully concluded on March 15. This initiative encourages student teams and clubs to design and execute volunteer projects that connect their respective majors with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). By combining academic expertise with social engagement, the program aims to foster a stronger sense of civic responsibility among students while contributing to the well-being of the surrounding community. With selected teams receiving financial support for their activities, the contest has already generated significant interest among students eager to make a meaningful and practical impact through their studies.

Collaboration Beyond Majors: Who is Participating?

The contest invited applications from student teams composed of three or more members, as well as established student clubs within the university. A key feature of this year’s initiative is the emphasis on interdisciplinary collaboration, which encourages students to combine at least two different academic majors to form a single functional team. By breaking down traditional barriers between departments, the program seeks to create opportunities for students with different academic backgrounds to share ideas and develop comprehensive approaches to solving community issues.

This interdisciplinary structure reflects the reality that many social problems cannot be addressed through a single field of study. For example, environmental challenges may require scientific knowledge, policy analysis, and public communication, while educational issues may benefit from expertise in psychology, technology, and design. Through collaboration, students are expected to gain a broader understanding of social issues while learning how to work effectively with individuals from different disciplines. As a result, anticipation is growing for innovative project proposals that can offer creative and sustainable solutions to challenges faced by local residents.

From Planning to Action: Timelines and Benefits

The selected student teams will implement their proposed ideas through structured project roadmaps tailored to the scope and objectives of their activities. Depending on the nature of their plans, teams are divided into either single-semester tracks running from March to June or full-year tracks continuing through November 27, 2026. This flexible structure allows students to pursue projects that match both their ambitions and available resources while maintaining a clear timeline for execution. To help participants focus on their volunteer initiatives, the university will provide financial support for project-related expenses. Following an internal evaluation process, activity funds will be distributed differentially according to each team’s proposal, objectives, and expected outcomes. This support enables students to transform ideas into action without facing excessive financial burdens.

In addition to funding, participants will receive basic volunteer education and structured review sessions throughout the project period. These programs are designed to strengthen students’ planning and leadership skills while helping them maximize the effectiveness of their community outreach efforts. Regular evaluations and feedback opportunities will also encourage teams to reflect on their progress and improve their project strategies as they move forward.

Empowering the Community and Students

Ultimately, the Major-Linked Community Problem-Solving Volunteer Contest serves as a meaningful platform where academic theory meets practical execution. It provides students with an opportunity to recognize the social value of their education by applying classroom knowledge to real-world situations. Rather than limiting learning to lectures and assignments, the program encourages participants to become active problem-solvers who contribute directly to society.

The initiative also strengthens the relationship between Sangmyung University and the local community. By addressing issues that affect nearby residents, students can gain a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by society while developing empathy, communication skills, and a stronger sense of public responsibility. At the same time, community members benefit from fresh ideas and innovative approaches proposed by young people with diverse academic expertise.

More importantly, the contest promotes the idea that volunteering can be a long-term commitment to social improvement rather than a one-time charitable activity. By connecting volunteer work with academic learning and sustainable development goals, the program creates opportunities for continuous engagement and meaningful impact. As participating teams begin implementing their final plans, the continued attention, encouragement, and support of the student body will play an important role in helping these young individuals transform their ideas into positive, lasting changes for both the university and the wider community.
